About This Video

I made a few goofy-looking little IoT devices that ended up solving some very real annoyances in my house. The big theme here is ESPHome + Home Assistant: I used cheap ESP8266/ESP32 microcontrollers, wrote simple YAML configs (honestly, ChatGPT got me most of the way there), and flashed firmware that just shows up inside Home Assistant on my local network. No cloud services, no subscriptions—just my own devices doing what I want on my own Wi‑Fi. I walk through three builds: a basic temperature/humidity sensor using a D1 Mini and an AM2302, a four-button Home Assistant remote using a Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-C3 (plus a 3D-printed enclosure and MX-style switches), and a smart garage door opener. The garage door build was the most “home lab” of the bunch: a relay triggers a sacrificial remote (no messing with existing wiring), and an HC‑SR04 ultrasonic sensor detects open/closed state, all wrapped up as a proper “cover” entity in Home Assistant. It’s not perfect or pretty, but it works—and I can tweak parameters and push updates over Wi‑Fi whenever I need to.
