About This Video

It feels good to be making videos again, because yeah—I've officially moved. The move itself was basically a blur (and a winter storm), so when we first got in here I did what any homelabber does under pressure: I chucked the old setup on the floor, plugged it into the modem, and called it “temporary.” It worked… kind of. In this video I finally build out the core network infrastructure for the new house so I can get back to normal projects like Home Assistant, cameras, and general tinkering. I ran a mix of cabling, but the big change is I went with OS2 single-mode fiber to a few key rooms where I’ll have switches (studio, office, and a central closet). I’m new to fiber, but I wanted the learning experience—and I like that it future-proofs me for 25G/40G without pulling new cable. The rest of the house (APs, cameras, random drops) is Cat5e. Then I installed a 15U open rack, patched everything into a keystone panel, and repurposed the gear I already had instead of trying to build a “perfect” ecosystem. For routing/firewall, I’m using a cheap little Supermicro box running Proxmox with an OPNsense VM, passing through dual 10G SFP+ plus a 1G WAN. I set up VLANs for trusted, lab, IoT, cameras, testing/guest, and management—simple rules, but a solid foundation that’s already working.
