About This Video

When it comes to self-hosting, Jellyfin might be the most important service in my house (because toddlers), but my surveillance setup is a very close second. In this video I finally get a local-only camera system up and running in the new house: Reolink cameras (a few RLC-510As, a Duo 3 PoE, plus a Reolink doorbell), all tied into Home Assistant for automations. The goal here is simple: peace of mind, no cloud dependency, and a setup that’s easy to expand later without ripping open walls. A big chunk of this build is the “real life” stuff: attic access that doesn’t cooperate, annoying camera pigtails, and me giving up on the perfectly-hidden cable plan. I use Reolink junction boxes (spray painted black to match the house), run Cat5e (fight me), and put a small unmanaged switch in the attic—then power it the sane way, from a closet, instead of trying to do sketchy high-voltage attic wiring. For recording, I skip the Reolink NVR (hot piece of garbage software-wise) and move to Frigate on a Debian 13 box with VLANs, 10GbE, and Home Assistant integration. I also talk through Coral TPU vs Intel iGPU (OpenVINO), why I ended up recording to NAS over SMB, and what I like—and still don’t like—about Frigate’s UI and configuration.
