About This Video

After moving into a new house, I realized (real fast) how much my family and I relied on Home Assistant—so this video is me starting over with a clean slate and building the smart home setup I actually wanted from the beginning. The main goals were pretty simple: avoid cloud and Wi‑Fi where I can, keep things organized and maintainable, and focus on automations that make day-to-day life easier instead of just doing goofy stuff (even though I’ll still do some of that too). I built a dedicated Home Assistant box on an HP EliteDesk G3 Mini, added the Home Assistant Connect Z-Wave and Zigbee adapters, and then racked everything up in a 3D printed Mod10 rack in a closet near the center of the house for better Zigbee coverage. From there, I started tackling the “boring but important” infrastructure: Z‑Wave light/fan switches (mostly Zooz), a motion-sensing switch in the garage, and a battery Z‑Wave scene controller to replace a couple of dead switches. I also integrated our Qolsys IQ4 alarm panel (with some VLAN/subnet caveats), and then I went on a whole ranty detour trying to automate my LiftMaster/MyQ garage doors—only to find out they’re Security+ 3.0 and basically hostile to local control. So I built a workaround using a Zigbee relay + a sacrificed remote, plus a tilt sensor to track door status. Finally, I walk through the dashboard and the automations I’m actually using: low-battery alerts, door/garage status, washer-done notifications, humidity-triggered bathroom fan plans, and scene buttons that make my studio setup way less annoying.
