About This Video

I’m pretty sure you can find an adapter for basically anything now, and in this video I went through a handful of the goofy (and surprisingly useful) ones you guys emailed me after the last “goofy adapters” episode. I tested a budget-friendly M.2 M-key to SFP+ 10Gb adapter that needs SATA power (and yes, I had to get a little creative powering it in an HP EliteDesk Mini). Once it was actually powered correctly, it showed up in the OS and I was able to hit full 10Gb speeds in iperf3, which is kind of wild for the price. From there, I got into the truly dumb stuff (like a 3D-printed HDMI-to-garden-hose adapter), and then back into practical homelab tinkering: a SATA power selector board that lets you physically power drives on/off for stuff like swapping boot disks, plus an NVMe hot-swap setup I’m planning to use so I can bounce between Windows and Fedora without Windows wrecking my bootloader. I also tried an M.2 E-key HDMI capture card that technically worked… but only after I had to email the company for a driver, which is just annoying. And my favorite “adapter” of the bunch: an SFP+ fiber module + community firmware that let me bypass my AT&T router entirely, cut out the extra nonsense, and even see speed tests up to ~1.2Gbps on my 1 gig plan.
