About This Video

In this video I’m sharing the exact techniques I use to stop binge eating urges—because I know that “bingy” feeling so well. I was at a carnival festival with my son and husband, eating ice cream, and I could feel that urge creeping in. I hated it, so I re-read Brain Over Binge and reminded myself of the tools that helped me stay binge-free for six weeks the first time I read it. The biggest key is learning where the urge is coming from: it’s a brain glitch. My brain has learned through repetition to think binge eating is as necessary as breathing, but that’s my “lizard brain” talking—my addictive voice. The technique is to recognize that voice, detach from it (without fighting it emotionally), and remember the truth: my prefrontal cortex is in charge. I literally cannot binge unless I choose to act. I also talk about meditation (from Bright Line Eating) as a way to create space between the trigger and the action so you can sit with the feeling instead of reacting. And I mention the “talk back” approach from Never Binge Again—naming the voice and pushing back—though I’m honest that it resonates less with my personality. This is a refresher I needed after a binge episode, and I hope it helps you use your techniques too.
