About This Video

What’s going on—you already know it’s Lee. In this video I put the Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 head-to-head with the Nikon 20mm f/1.8 S on the Nikon Zf, and I ran my usual image-quality tests so you can see what you’re actually getting for the money. The Viltrox is around $176, the Nikon is about $1,046, so the big question the whole time is: is the Nikon worth roughly $870 more? I break down specs and handling first—weight (Viltrox is super light at 209g vs 571g), hoods, firmware updating (USB-C on the Viltrox), and the pro features Nikon brings like weather resistance and an AF/MF switch. Then we get into the real stuff: vignetting, distortion, flare, chromatic aberration, sharpness (corners and center), bokeh balls, and compression. Bottom line: Nikon controls vignetting and distortion better and stays sharper in the corners, but the Viltrox surprised me with how sharp it is dead center. And I’m not gonna lie—the chromatic aberration I saw on the Nikon at this price point kind of freaked me out. No winners or losers here—just two different lenses for two different shooters.
