About This Video

In this video I put two budget-friendly full-frame 40mm options for Nikon Z head-to-head: the TTArtisan 40mm f/2 and the Viltrox 40mm f/2.5. Quick disclaimer up front—both brands sent these over for evaluation—but I ran them through my usual real-world tests so you can decide which one fits you based on character and functionality. The wild part is they’re the same price (about $168), so this one really comes down to what you value. I break down specs and build first: the TTArtisan is more compact, full metal, and gives you a clickable aperture ring, while the Viltrox is lighter plastic and keeps it simple with a focus ring only. USB-C updates are handled differently too—TTArtisan on the rear cap (easy to lose), Viltrox on the back of the lens (more convenient). Then I get into vignetting, bokeh balls, distortion (TTArtisan is a touch wider and shows a bit more distortion), CA (I didn’t see anything crazy on either), flare (TTArtisan renders warmer), and sunstars (Viltrox looks a little better around f/11–f/16). For sharpness, the Viltrox is consistently a smidge sharper across portraits and my playground landscape scene, especially wide open. But I actually prefer the TTArtisan’s warmer, nicer skin tone rendering, and in low light autofocus I felt the TTArtisan had it by a hair—plus f/2 gives you more light to work with. Bottom line: you can’t really go wrong; pick sharpness and closer focusing with Viltrox, or compact build, aperture ring, warmer rendering, and the f/2 advantage with TTArtisan.
