In this video I review the S.M.S.L RAW-MDA1 desktop DAC/amp and go through everything from the unboxing to real-world pairings. RAW-MDA1 is built around dual ESS ES9039Q2M DAC chips and six OPA1612A op-amps, with support for PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit, DSD512, and MQA. You get both 6.3mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs, plus RCA and XLR line outs, Bluetooth 5.1 (including LDAC), four digital inputs, and a built-in power supply—so it’s a pretty complete “all-in-one” desktop unit. I also cover the menu system and day-to-day usability: the display shows file type, connection, volume and sample rate, the volume steps are 0.5dB, and the menu is extensive but well structured (filters, gain, sound color presets, fixed/variable line out, UAC1/UAC2, UI styles, brightness, timeout, etc.). Sound-wise, I don’t believe DACs drastically change the sound, but the amp section can—and here I’m getting an organic, natural, transparent presentation with a solid black background and no obvious coloration. In my testing it drove basically everything I threw at it, from sensitive IEMs (low gain, no audible noise) to 250–300Ω dynamics and low-sensitivity planars (high gain), with great dynamics, separation, and detail. My only “picky” complaints are the plastic volume knob and the protruding display—otherwise, the price-to-performance is fantastic.
