In this review I take a deep look at the Burson Audio Playmate 3 desktop DAC/amp—my first Burson product on the channel—and I was genuinely excited to get it on my desk. I go through the unboxing, design, and build quality (anodized aluminum chassis, premium machining, and the case acting as a heat sink for the Class A amp), plus a clear walkthrough of the front/back panels. I also cover what you get with Standard vs Deluxe editions, because the Deluxe unit I tested includes the V7 Vivid Pro op-amps, SP02 power modules, Burson Supercharger PSU, and the matching aluminum remote. On the technical side, I highlight the ESS ES9039 DAC implementation (PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit and native DSD512), the modular design for swapping op-amps/power modules, and the very serious output power (up to 3.5W Class A per channel at 16 ohms). I also show the menu system features—gain, filters, DAC path options, THD compensation, auto-off, and even USB mic toggle for headset support. Sound-wise, my takeaway is simple: the Playmate 3 is punchy, exceptionally transparent, natural, and it drove every full-size headphone I tested with authority, dynamics, separation, and detail. For sensitive IEMs, it’s usable but you’ll be limited on volume range and may hear a bit of hiss—this is clearly a device built with full-size headphones in mind.
