In this video I review the Meze 105 AER open-back headphones and compare them directly with the Meze 109 Pro, plus I also show and test the Meze Boom Mic cable. I go through the unboxing (Meze’s presentation is still one of the best), the build and service-friendly design, the self-adjusting headband mechanism, and the velour pads. I also share exact comfort impressions from my perspective (I have large ears and I wear glasses), and explain why the 105 AER ends up feeling lighter on the head than it looks thanks to the weight distribution and average clamping force. Sound-wise, I describe the 105 AER as a silky, full, slightly dark, and very enjoyable tuning: pronounced and surprisingly authoritative bass for an open-back, a warm and organic midrange that’s the star of the show, and a soft-but-revealing treble that reminds me a bit of the HD 650 style smoothness. Versus the 109 Pro, the 105 AER gets very close in bass and delivers about “90%” of the midrange magic, but it falls behind in midrange resolution and overall technical performance—especially treble detail retrieval. I also cover staging (more depth than width), imaging (on point), layering, and why it can work for gaming even if it’s not class-leading for competitive multiplayer.
