About This Video

How’s it going, dive buddies—Cal here from The Dive Wagon, and in this quick scuba tip I’m breaking down three super common reasons you might be getting water sneaking into the second stage of your regulator when you inhale. If your dive suddenly comes with that “slurping” sound and your air feels damp instead of nice and dry, something isn’t sealing the way it should. First up, I look at the simplest culprit: the mouthpiece. If there’s a cut or hole around the outside, it can literally act like a straw and pull water in every breath—easy to spot and easy to fix by swapping the mouthpiece. Second, I cover the one-way purge/exhaust valve under the exhaust tee. If there’s debris in there, the valve is tucked, or there’s a pinhole/tear, you’ll lose that perfect seal and water will leak back in—sometimes you can fix it on the spot, and sometimes you’re heading to the dive shop. Finally, I talk about the second-stage diaphragm under the faceplate. Even a tiny hole can turn into a big tear and let water in, and that’s generally not an on-site repair. Bottom line: check the easy stuff first, and don’t be shy about getting a shop to replace parts when the sealing surfaces are compromised.
