About This Video

In this Dive Site Review, I headed into Lake Simcoe to check out the J.C. Morrison wreck—about an hour and a half north of Toronto. If you punch Centennial Park (Barrie) into your GPS, it’ll get you right to the paved parking lot. From there, you face the water, walk down the stone staircase, and you’re basically at your entry point. It’s roughly a 10-minute swim out to the wreck, and there’s a line to follow, which was honestly super handy—compass work is still a must. I break down what you can expect on the dive: visibility here is hit or miss thanks to nearby boat traffic, a silty/muddy bottom, and the fact it’s popular for training dives. We had around 10–15 ft vis, and on a great day you might see 20–25 ft. Temp was mid-50s Fahrenheit for us. The wreck itself is scattered, but the line leads you to the bow and eventually to the paddle wheel, which I thought was really neat (and something I hadn’t seen before). I rated the site 4 snorkels out of 5 for the wreck, accessibility, amenities (bathrooms, picnic tables, grassy setup areas), and proximity—just bring a dive flag because some boaters don’t exactly follow the rules.
