About This Video

So you’re back from your trip and it’s time to rinse your BCD—this quick scuba tip is all about doing it the right way so you can extend the life of your gear. In the video I walk you through how I thoroughly rinse the inside of the BCD bladder, not just the outside. All you really need is your BCD and some fresh water (I’m using a garden hose, but a bathtub or shower works just fine). I also mention the other big “gear longevity” move: get your BCD serviced yearly when you take the rest of your kit in for annual service. The main trick is using the BCD’s openings to your advantage. You can fill through the inflator while holding the deflate button, but I don’t love that method because it’s messy unless you’ve got four hands. Instead, I like going straight to the dump valves—unscrew one, add fresh water directly into the bladder, and then swish it around inside like you were taught in class. If the BCD is really salty, I’ll let it sit a bit to help break down salt crystals, then dump the water and repeat (one rinse minimum, more until you’re satisfied). I also cover how to avoid cross-threading when reinstalling valves, and why dunk tanks aren’t a “real rinse” unless you’re first in line.
