About This Video

When you’re done diving for the week—or you’re packing it in for the season—your regulator deserves a little love before you just chuck it somewhere. In this quick scuba tip, I run through my three do’s and one don’t for storing your regulator, and it’s all super simple, super easy. The goal is to keep your hoses happy and your setup ready to go when it’s finally time to get back in the water. First, you can store your reg by hanging it up: on a hook, a nail, or some fancy contraption (I’ve got my own scuba closet setup). Second, you can just lay it down—on a shelf, in a container, or even on the counter if you’re feeling proud of it. Third, you can coil it up, but here’s the one big “don’t”: don’t coil it too tight. Tight coils can kink hoses and wear them out faster, so I keep it relaxed so there’s no extra pressure on the joints, hose, or where the coupling meets. And if you’re storing it for the season, I recommend timing your annual service for the beginning of your dive season. That way any dried-out O-rings or salt buildup that happened during storage gets dealt with before you jump back in—just give your dive shop lots of lead time.
