In this Quick Scuba Tips video, I’m talking about something I think a lot of divers overlook once they discover online shopping and forums: the benefits of finding and actually using a local dive shop. I’m not saying the internet isn’t valuable (I mean… I make scuba YouTube videos), but there are some things a physical shop in your area can do that you just can’t replicate through a screen. I break it down into my top five reasons. First, I see a dive shop as a portal to the dive world—especially if you’re new in town, the only diver in your family, or you just need dive buddies. Shops are basically diver “matchmakers,” connecting you with local divers and pointing you toward the good “holes and puddles” to dive nearby. Second, the knowledge in a shop can be unreal—gear advice, fittings, training and skills input, even photography/videography tips—especially from staff who’ve been doing this for 30–40 years. Then we get into the fun stuff: gear. Dive shops are heaven for gear junkies, and they’re built around long-term relationships—customers that turn into friends and dive buddies. Finally, there are perks: discounts, air, rentals, and invite-only events. Bottom line: go meet your local shop, meet your people, and keep diving.
