In this quick scuba tip, I walk you through how I select and fit a dive (or snorkel) mask—because if the mask doesn’t fit, what’s the point? I start by breaking down what actually makes a mask seal: it’s that inner lip of the skirt sealing against your face. Since we all have different face shapes (narrow, wide, everything in between), the same mask won’t work for everyone. Too narrow and it rides close to your eyes and leaks; too wide and it can sit high on your forehead, hit your hair, and drop too low on your upper lip. Then I show you my go-to fitting test you can do right in the shop: flip the strap forward, tilt your head back, gently hold the mask to your face (don’t press), and sniff in through your nose. If you can’t get a seal without forcing it, that mask isn’t for you—because you can “force seal” a bad fit on the surface and it’ll betray you once you’re actually diving. After fit, I talk comfort—watch for pressure points around eyebrows and nose, especially if they’re touching the lens. Finally, we can talk style and color, but I always put fit and comfort first, and I recommend you do the same.
