About This Video

Welcome back to Quick Scuba Tips — in this one I’m showing you the quick and simple way to troubleshoot and fix that steady stream of bubbles coming from around your scuba pressure gauge. A lot of the time it looks like the leak is coming from the glass or a seam, but if you’ve got a gauge boot/console on there, it can totally fool you. First step is always to get the gauge out of the boot so you can actually see where the bubbles are coming from. Depending on your setup, that might mean removing screws on the back, pushing it out of a softer rubber boot, or softening up an older stiff boot with warm water so the gauge will pop out. Once the gauge is exposed, I walk you through checking the hose-to-gauge connection — and that’s where the leak usually is. I grab two adjustable wrenches (this shouldn’t be reefed on, so it should come apart easily), and inside you’ll find the high pressure swivel spool. That little piece seals with two tiny o-rings, and when they dry out, get flaky, or feather off, air sneaks by and you get bubbles. You can either replace the tiny o-rings if you’ve got them, or my favorite easy fix: keep a whole spare HP swivel spool in your save-a-dive kit and swap the entire thing. Add a touch of O-ring lube, snug it up gently, and always test your repair before you jump back in the water. Happy diving.
