About This Video

You don’t want to be that dive buddy driving home with your wetsuit strapped to the roof because it smells like a dirty swamp—trust me. In this quick scuba tip, I break down why neoprene starts to stink in the first place: enzymes and little floating creatures from the water latch onto your wetsuit and neoprene accessories, and over time they basically rot into “smell foam.” That’s exactly where enzyme cleaners come in. My go-to method is simple and doesn’t require scrubbing your life away. I toss all my smelly neoprene (wetsuit, boots, gloves, hood—anything neoprene) into a tub, add water, drop in a small packet of enzyme deodorizer (some have fun names like “Sink the Stink”), and let it soak until everything is fully saturated. Then I just hang it to dry—no rinse, no scrub. If your stink is next-level, double down on the cleaner and/or the soak time. The real key is staying on top of it: I usually do a full clean once per season (end of season), and sometimes a mid-season wash if I’ve been diving in particularly gross water like swamps or questionable quarries—because I like post-dive hangouts as much as the dive itself.
