About This Video

How’s it going, dive buddies! In this quick (but not-so-quick) scuba tip, I walk you through how I change the tank valve O-ring the simple way—without grabbing a dental pick and risking scratches on the valve face. O-rings wear out over time: they dry up, fray, and start “feathering.” And once that sealing surface isn’t happy anymore, you’re going to hear it (that hiss at the reg connection) or see it (a little trickle of bubbles while you’re in the water). I start by showing you what to look for so you know when it’s time: hissing air when you pressurize, bubbles during a dive, or visible feathering when you inspect the valve (I always look at the valve like it’s a little face). Then I show my favorite removal method: use the trapped air pressure in your regulator to pop the old O-ring out instead of prying it out with a pick. It’s easy, it reduces the risk of gouging the valve face to basically zero, and it’s something you can do with just your tank, your reg, and a spare O-ring. After that, I show how I seat the new O-ring—start it with a finger, snug it down with the regulator, inspect for pinches or cuts, and then always re-pressurize and leak-check before you go diving.
