In this quick scuba tip, I walk you through exactly how I change the lenses in a Mares X-Vision and Mares X-Vision Liquid Skin mask—without wrecking the frame. The big takeaway: use the little plastic tool that comes with the Mares prescription lenses (it looks like a tiny plastic screwdriver). If you don’t have one, check with your local dive shop—most of them have a pile of these floating around. I don’t recommend using a metal screwdriver, and I’ll show you why. Before I start prying anything apart, I break the mask down into the four main components so you know what you’re looking at: the silicone skirt, the lenses, the rigid main frame, and the thinner “pinch” frame that actually locks everything together. That thin frame has eight little tabs, and those tabs are what you’re protecting—break them and your mask can loosen up and start leaking between the lenses. I show where to start (I like the nose), how to push straight down with minimal effort, how to hop around if one section is tight, and how to reassemble everything in reverse. Once it’s clicked back in, I do a quick “sniff test” on my face and a visual inspection to make sure every tab is seated.
