PB33 Genuine Manganese Blue is a rare pigment with incredible vibrancy and heavy granulation great for color separating mixtures. Handmade watercolor for pigment enthusiasts currently available - Prodigal Son's - Show more for links! Manganese Blue Genuine PB33 available from Prodigal Son's Artists Pigments as well as the Vivianite, Jarosite, Chrome Red Orange and Yellow used in my bird painting (shipping to many countries worldwide) can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ProdigalSonsPigments?coupon=KIM10 NOTE: I have given this shop permission to use my art and swatch card images. I am not affiliated with this shop or etsy. I do NOT make money from promoting this brand. I just love his paints and appreciate him making rare and granulating pigments available to watercolor artists and pigment enthusiasts. This small business is run by Gregory Kuhar in PA, USA. I will be making a separate brand overview video regarding my experience with this shop and 30+ handmade watercolors. Until then my detailed written review with swatch pictures can be found at https://www.kimcrick.com/pages/prodigal-sons-pigments-handmade-watercolor Prodigal Son's has shared a coupon code with me ( KIM10 ) so that we can take 10% off any regular priced watercolor in his shop (many available in standard half pan or full pan size). A more common alternative to PB33 = Phthalo Blue PB15 based "Manganese Blue Hue" from Daniel Smith from Jacksons (UK/worldwide) here - https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/search/?q=daniel%2Bsmith%2Bmanganese%2Bblue%2Bhue&___store=jacksonsart_us&acc=c0f168ce8900fa56e57789e2a2f2c9d0 or on Amazon (USA) here - https://amzn.to/34RRtdK Video about the DS "Hue" (AKA look-alike replica) at https://youtu.be/MnCsb7m18io White highlights: I use white gouache and a 3/0 Princeton heritage round detail brush. I no longer recommend gel pens (one too many blobs, skips and fixed line width). Any pro grade PW6 Titanium White gouache will do + watercolor can be mixed with it to tint your highlights. M Graham has a lovely white gouache that does not crack in the dry pan as badly as other brands, but Schmincke Horadam's pro gouache is a close second with superb quality. Titanium White gouache from Schmincke available on Jacksons (UK/worldwide) here: https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/schmincke-horadam-gouache-us?___store=jacksonsart_us&acc=c0f168ce8900fa56e57789e2a2f2c9d0 or find M Graham white gouache in the US on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3rIw8wi or at Blick: https://shrsl.com/3ds5w Air blower - While technically a straw would work for moving wet pools of paint to achieve splatter effects, I do not recommend using a straw to blow air through with your mouth. Most watercolors even less toxic ones, have ingredients that aren't healthy to accidentally ingest + blowing takes a lot of lung power. Instead try camera lens forced air cleaner tools, dust cleaner air tool, or even canned air sold for cleaning keyboards (caution, has a liquid propellant so could get messy). In this video I used the air blower made for card making / alcohol inks by Tim Holtz from Amazon USA - https://amzn.to/3Ln24xU PAPER I mainly use Arches Cold Press you can find it on Jackson's UK - https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/arches-aquarelle-pads-us?___store=jacksonsart_us&acc=c0f168ce8900fa56e57789e2a2f2c9d0 or Blick USA - https://shrsl.com/2twqj AFFORDABLE alternative: BaoHong academy cotton - https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/baohong-academy-pure-cotton-watercolour-paper-block-300gsm-20-sheets?___store=jacksonsart_us&acc=c0f168ce8900fa56e57789e2a2f2c9d0 My favorite porcelain mini mixing tray with many wells for easy color mixing! About This Video

In this watercolor spotlight I’m testing PB33 Manganese Blue Genuine—one of those rare pigments that pigment nerds (hi, it’s me) get really excited about. I swatch it, play with it in washes, and focus on what makes it special: the incredible vibrancy and that heavy granulation that can create gorgeous texture and color-separating mixtures. If you love granulating blues, this is one of those “prodigal son returns” pigments that feels almost mythical when you finally get to paint with it. I’m using PB33 from Prodigal Son’s Artists Pigments, a small business run by Gregory Kuhar in Pennsylvania. I’m not affiliated with the shop or Etsy and I don’t make money from promoting the brand—I just genuinely love his paints and appreciate that he’s making rare, granulating pigments available to watercolor artists. I also share a more common alternative if you can’t get PB33: Daniel Smith Manganese Blue Hue (PB15-based), which is easier to find and scratches a similar itch even though it’s not the genuine pigment. And yes—when I add white highlights, I’m using white gouache (not gel pens… I’m done with the blobs and skipping).
