What's new in this set? Affordable bargain set differences vs Paul Rubens. Fluorescent dye additives. Bummer the undisclosed fugitive colors may hurt artists who trust incorrect lightfast ratings -show more for links- For serious beginner watercolorists: I would still consider this set as one of the best practice paints available. Great for sketchbooks, crafts and color theory. If you're going to be making serious attempts at work you might gift, frame for your wall or sell on Etsy though - I highly recommend picking up a lightfast Magenta PR122 (cool red) and a Cadmium Red PR108 -or- Pyrrol Red PR255 (warm reds) that have excellent lightfastness. Roman Szmal is a great brand with good prices to supplement the stable blues/browns you get from cheap sets like this. I most often use very fine line width 01 fineliners or 0.20 tip size technical pens. R&K SketchInk is lightfast, waterproof and comes in many colors: https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/rohrer-klinger-sketchink-50ml?___store=jacksonsart_us&acc=c0f168ce8900fa56e57789e2a2f2c9d0 White highlights: I use white gouache and a 3/0 princeton heritage round detail brush. I no longer recommend gel pens (blobs, skips, fixed line width). Any pro grade PW6 Titanium White gouache can be mixed with watercolor to tint your highlights. M Graham has a lovely white gouache that does not crack in the dry pan as badly as other brands, but Schmincke Horadam's pro gouache is a close second with superb quality. About This Video

In this video I’m testing the MeiLiang “Pretty Excellent” 48-color set and comparing it to the 36-color Paul Rubens-style bargain sets a lot of us see online. I swatch, do quick demos, and then dig into the stuff that actually matters if you care about your paintings lasting—lightfastness and what’s really inside these pans. One of the big takeaways is that this set can look surprisingly good on paper for the price, which is why I still think it’s one of the best practice paint options for serious beginners. But I also talk about the “bummer” part: undisclosed fugitive colors and questionable lightfast ratings can hurt artists who trust what’s printed on the chart. I also do a dye/fluorescence check (UV flashlight) because some of these affordable sets can include fluorescent dye additives—fun for sketchbooks and crafts, not what I want in anything I’m gifting, framing, or selling. If you want to keep using a cheap set for the stable blues and browns, my recommendation is to supplement it with truly lightfast reds—specifically a lightfast Magenta PR122 (cool red) and a Cadmium Red PR108 or Pyrrol Red PR255 (warm red). I also mention Roman Szmal as a great-priced way to add more dependable pigments (and more granulating options) to your palette.
