In this video I’m swatching and reviewing 15 of the newer Roman Szmal Aquarius watercolor colors that came out from late 2021 into early 2022. I focus on what I always care about most with supplies: how the paints behave on paper (especially granulation and texture), how they look in real swatches, and which pigments feel truly unique—because Roman Szmal is one of those brands that consistently offers interesting, rare, and very “pigment-nerdy” options. I paint out the colors on my usual paper (I mainly use Arches Cold Press) and mix on my little porcelain palette with lots of wells so I can quickly compare undertones and see how the pigments separate. I’m using my soft Neptune brushes (they hold so much water), and I also share the tools I rely on for clean linework and highlights—like waterproof Tombow Mono fineliners and white gouache instead of gel pens (because gel pens blob, skip, and lock you into one line width). The video also includes a small tribute painting to my cat Cookie, using these new colors in an actual piece so you can see them beyond the swatch grid.
