In this video I’m sharing my NBr8 lightfast test results for Van Dyke (Vandyke/Van Dyck) Brown, and I’m also calling out a really frustrating issue: fugitive paints that aren’t clearly labeled as fugitive. Van Dyke Brown has a bunch of spellings depending on translation, but it’s typically tied to the pigment NBr8 (named after Flemish painter Anthony Van Dyck). I tested versions from brands like Holbein, ShinHan, and Roman Szmal so you can see what happens over time and make an informed decision before you put this color into work you want to last. My big takeaway is that you can’t always rely on a paint name or even a quick rating glance—companies can be unclear in their ratings, and that’s how artists end up surprised by fading. I’m sharing the results as a warning to fellow artists, especially if you sell work, do commissions, or just want your sketchbooks and paintings to hold up. If you love deep browns, this is one of those pigments where you really want to know what you’re buying and how it behaves in real-world light exposure before you commit it to your palette.
