In this video I’m reviewing the Schmincke Horadam Super Granulating limited sets—Shire Desert and Volcano—and I’m doing it the way I always like to see it myself: swatches first, then real painting. I make swatch cards so you can really judge the separation, texture, and how the pigments settle on cold press paper. These super granulating colors are all about that beautiful “broken” wash look, so I’m paying attention to how easily they granulate, how they re-wet, and what they do when you push them with lots of water versus a thicker mix. After the swatches, I mix up a few DIY mixtures to see what kinds of extra neutrals and earthy textures you can get out of the sets. Then I paint a couple quick demos (a beach scene and a duck) so you can see the colors in context—because granulation can look amazing on a swatch and totally different once you start layering. If you’re curious whether these sets are worth it, my biggest takeaway is that they’re specialty colors meant for texture lovers, and they really shine on good cotton paper with plenty of water and patience while they dry.
