I use TrueNAS for a lot of my projects and videos, but it’s been a while since I did a proper, start-to-finish setup guide. In this one, I walk through exactly how I configure TrueNAS SCALE for myself to be a reliable home NAS—without getting lost in the weeds on advanced stuff like replication or caching. I start with the prerequisites and hardware basics (yes, you don’t need a monster server, and no, most home users don’t “need” ECC), then I install SCALE, do a couple quick system tweaks, and lock in networking so the box doesn’t randomly change IPs on me. From there I build out the storage the way most people actually need it: create a pool (I use a simple mirror here), make datasets, set up an SMB share, and fix permissions/ACLs so my user can actually access it from Windows. Then we get into the stuff that keeps you from having a bad day later—scrubs, SMART tests, and a snapshot schedule that makes “oops I deleted that” a non-event. I also show a straightforward cloud backup using Backblaze B2, plus email alerts so you actually find out when something’s wrong. And even though I prefer keeping services off my NAS, I still cover getting apps going (like Jellyfin) so you can do it all in one box if you want.
