In this review I’m putting the ByoWave Proteus Builder under the microscope—this weird, freaky, modular one-handed “controller” that’s really more of a one-handed keyboard for PC, but can also default as an official Xbox controller setup. I love seeing concepts like this in a world of bland, boring controllers, and the ergonomics are genuinely comfy: my palm just rests on top and I can reach basically everything. The thumbstick module in particular feels buttery smooth with great resistance, and the face buttons have a nice tactile, almost mechanical click. But yeah… mine came out of the box straight up broken, with cracks in the shell and a rough, sanded-looking finish plus a strong chemical smell. On PC, the software does work and it’s cool that it shows your module layout in real time, lets you remap, do macros, and tweak Hall effect stick deadzones/recalibration—but the setup is clunky, pairing took a while, and you have to make an account just to use the app. Input lag is the big competitive downside: I measured about 24ms both wired and on the Bluetooth dongle with jitter and inconsistency, and you can’t overclock it. My verdict: I wouldn’t recommend the Proteus Builder as a one-handed keyboard because there are better options. The more expensive Proteus Controller kit is the one that makes sense for accessibility and true customization—honestly, the names should be swapped.
