Sim racing is one of those things that can be a legit training tool for real drivers, or just a ridiculously fun way to spend hours at home. In this video I break it down in “show this to your mom or aunt” terms: the core of sim racing is force feedback—your wheel literally communicating what the car is doing. Losing traction, hitting different surfaces, bumps and ripples on laser-scanned tracks that are built to match the real world… it’s all right there in your hands. I also talk about how you don’t have to break the bank to start. You can clamp a second-hand Logitech G923 to a desk and be off to the races, but once the bug bites you’ll probably want more strength and accuracy—hello direct drive wheel bases. From there, you can stack immersion: wind effects, under-seat vibration, pedals that vibrate for ABS, realistic shifters, even handbrakes (or “rip sticks” as the kids call them). Then you’ve got triple monitors or VR for that full cockpit feel, plus a good headset/IEMs for all the detail. Motion rigs are the “final boss”—expensive, loud, power-hungry—and in my opinion they should be the last upgrade, because it’s debatable if they actually make you faster.
