Odyssey (Audeze) dropped the Maxwell 2, and yeah… it’s got a handful of upgrades, but somehow I still prefer the original Maxwell. I’ve got 500+ hours of ear-cup time on the OG because it’s basically my daily driver in my home racing sim, so I know exactly what that headset feels like in 3–4 hour sessions. In this review I break down what changed, what actually matters in real use, and why “newer” didn’t end up meaning “better” for me. The big upgrades on the Maxwell 2 are a better mic with AI noise reduction, magnetic ear pads, “more durable” control dials, comfort tweaks with a wider headband, cosmetic changes, and this new SLAM tech that’s supposed to improve soundstage. But in my testing, the OG Maxwell sounds better out of the box and responds way more noticeably to EQ and presets in the app. The Maxwell 2 also feels looser on my smaller head, it’s heavier, and the magnetic pad system kills compatibility with the massive aftermarket earcup ecosystem—which matters because I don’t even like the stock pads on either version. Bottom line: I think the Maxwell 2 is more of a side-grade (honestly a “Maxwell 1.5”), and with the original likely getting cheaper, I’d still point most people at Maxwell 1 unless the mic upgrade is your main priority.
