About This Video

In this video I’m testing the SIRUI 40mm T1.8 S35 1.33x anamorphic autofocus lens for Nikon Z-mount (on the Z8), and yeah—this is a weird one for me because it’s a solo review. I usually have a second lens to compare, but I don’t normally have anamorphic in the studio, so I focused on real-world image tests and what you actually get for the money. This lens is roughly $800, all-metal, geared rings, 77mm filter thread, USB-C firmware port, and a 2-year warranty. It’s APS-C/Super 35 only, T1.8 to T22, minimum focus distance is 60cm, and there’s no IS. I ran my usual set of tests: vignetting (basically none), distortion (a slight bow), bokeh behavior (more hexagonal wide open, then more elliptical as you stop down), focus breathing (a little, but not bad), and chromatic aberration (very subtle in my shots). Sharpness is solid in the center with slightly softer edges wide open, and it tightens up around f/5.6 to f/8. For flares, I’m using the neutral version and I like it—SIRUI didn’t make it obnoxious. The flare really depends on light intensity, so you get variation instead of that overplayed constant blue line look. The big takeaway: anamorphic with autofocus is a huge plus, and the tracking worked well for me even with the sun trying to distract it. My main gripes are that Nikon Z seems locked to Super 35 (no full-frame mode option like some Sony versions), and my sample got noticeably loud with the AF motor at f/22—probably something firmware or production could address.
