About This Video

In this video I finally put the Nikon ZF head-to-head with the Nikon Z6II, and I ran them the way I always do: long, thorough image-quality tests. First I break down the real-world differences for the $400 price gap (about $1,600 for the Z6II vs about $2,000 for the ZF), then I get into specs that actually matter in use—EXPEED 7 on the ZF vs dual EXPEED 6 on the Z6II, 24MP full frame on both, and what you gain with things like 10-bit internal video on the ZF. From there I test autofocus in bad light and good light (video and photo). The ZF is just flat-out better: eye tracking in darkness is awesome, and even with glasses and a hat trying to trick it, it stays more precise than the Z6II’s box-style tracking. I also compare screens/EVF, build feel, ports, storage, and buffering behavior. The ZF’s buffer gives you more shots up front with no stop-gap, while the Z6II can push a bit more later but has that gap. For image quality, I run color science, ISO, and dynamic range pulls. Color is basically the same, but the ZF tends to be a tad brighter across tests—and in dynamic range, the ZF is better (mechanical and electronic shutter). I went in thinking the ZF was just a cosmetic upgrade; after testing, it’s totally different in the ways that matter in difficult situations.
