In this video I put the Laowa 15mm F5 “cookie” lens head-to-head with my Nikon 14-30mm F4, but I only stay at the 15mm mark on the Nikon so it’s a fair fight. Laowa did send the lens over for evaluation, and like always, all opinions are my own. I break down pricing first (about $400 vs roughly $1,350), then I run through the real-world stuff I care about: build, weight, features, and how each lens actually renders a scene. From there I go through my usual tests: vignetting, distortion, chromatic aberration, flare, and a couple outdoor environment shots. The Laowa vignettes harder, has a bit more distortion, and it’s manual focus only with no weather resistance—but it has character. The flare/sunburst is wild (it literally gave me “Zelda” vibes), and the color rendering is more saturated to my eye, especially in the sky and grass. The Nikon is the cleaner, sharper tool with autofocus and weather resistance, but it’s more “plain Jane” in look, and I found a big bummer: major focus breathing on the 14-30 when you’re close to a subject. At the end of the day, these are two different lenses for two different people, and I’ll let you decide which fits your Nikon ZF setup.
