About This Video

What's up everybody—on the desk in this video I’m checking out the Rodyweil RO-04 mic preamp and the whole idea is simple: can a small, budget-friendly box level up the front end of your interface? The RO-04 is all metal, runs on USB-C power, and gives you up to 72 dB of adjustable gain boost. You also get phantom power, a high-pass filter, a phase switch, and a bunch of I/O options (XLR and 1/4" in, plus XLR and 1/8" out), so there’s a lot of flexibility packed into something that barely takes up more space than my interface. I run a few real-world tests: first, a condenser mic on acoustic guitar and vocals, then an A/B comparison where I bypass my interface preamps by turning the interface gain all the way down and letting the RO-04 do the work. I do that with a handheld Sennheiser mic and then the real test—an SM7B—because that mic usually forces you to crank interface gain almost all the way up. Unedited, raw audio, no EQ/compression/noise reduction, just straight into Reaper so you can hear the difference in gain and noise floor. In my ears, it comes across clearer with less noise, and if your interface preamps feel weak, noisy, or you just don’t like their tone, this is exactly what something like the RO-04 is designed to fix.
