About This Video

It’s raining like crazy outside my studio, so I figured—what better way to spend the evening than doing a proper rig build. This is v2 of my Canon C70 production rig, and I want to be super clear (because my last build got a lot of flak): this is not a “run around and chase gimbal shots” handheld setup. This is a production build meant to mostly live on sticks, with just a bit of handheld here and there when I need it. The whole reason I love the C70 is I can tear it down really small, or build it up depending on the shoot—and I still love the colors, the built-in NDs, and the fact that we can shoot RAW now. In this build I start from the base: a heavy-duty SmallRig VCT plate for fast tripod work, then a full-body Nitze cage (with some thoughts on why I might replace it). I add rods and a V-mount plate mainly for balance and to power my monitor—not the camera—because I’m still cautious about running DC-in from cheaper V-mounts. Up top, my favorite piece is the Nitze Stinger handle, plus SmallRig HawkLock quick release so I can reposition accessories fast. For monitoring, I’m using the Feelworld LUT7S Pro (ultra bright, but not perfect), and I keep the build clean by powering my Vaxis transmitter right off the monitor’s NPF pass-through. I finish it off with Sprig cable management, a rosette side handle with a SmallRig wooden grip, and a modular matte box when I need more light control.
