About This Video

A photobook has been on my mind for the past three years, and this video is me finally taking it seriously. This is Episode 1 of a series where I’m documenting the whole process—partly for my own accountability, partly to hopefully help someone who’s trying to build their own photo project and keeps running into the same questions. I talk through the initial concept, the gear I’m choosing, and why this project feels personal to me. The tentative title right now is “Budak Subang” (“budak” meaning child in Malay). I grew up in Subang, Malaysia, and I’ve always been inspired by projects from overseas that document someone’s suburbs and everyday life—so I wanted to turn that lens back onto my own town. The direction I’m gravitating towards is the quiet, still parts of Subang that feel nostalgic: empty parks, calm streets, small details that trigger memories. Gear-wise, I’m choosing film because the process forces me to slow down—meter, frame, wait—and that fits the “memory” side of what I’m trying to do. I started on 35mm with my Leica M6, but I’m now leaning hard into the square format on my Hasselblad 500CM. I also share the challenges I’m facing: shooting the same places repeatedly, not knowing if I have “enough,” and the bigger question—how do you actually photograph nostalgia when you can’t go back in time?
