The wireless follow focus I'd get if I was on a budget. Solid and reliable connection with the only issue being a relatively average build quality. About This Video

SmallRig has been doing a lot of interesting things lately—moving beyond just camera rigs into lights, mics, and now the MagicFiz system (focus/iris/zoom). In this video I break down the SmallRig MagicFiz Wireless Follow Focus and answer the real question: is this the right wireless follow focus for you if you’re on a budget, or if you’re a small crew that can’t justify Preston/ARRI money? I’m looking specifically at the basic kit I was sent (wheel + one motor), and I talk about why I actually like that SmallRig is building an ecosystem—ACs can run the wheel, solo operators can add the grip, and you can expand to more motors if you need. I go through the physical overview, setup, and usability—honestly it’s pretty idiot-proof. Match the channel/motor numbers, power it on, and you’re pulling focus. My favorite part is the OLED interface and the A/B marking system, because you can set digital “hard stops” which is super useful when you’re shooting wide open (like f/0.95). The biggest surprise for me is responsiveness and reliability: compared to my experience with the Tilta Nucleus Nano being fidgety, the MagicFiz is very responsive and I’ve had no signal drops even around people, walls, and wireless-heavy sets. That said, it’s not perfect. The build quality feels average for the money, the rubber buttons are annoying to press, the wheel is too smooth with almost no tension, and the NPF battery plate setup on the motor feels clunky. If you actually need wireless focus for sliders, dollies, and more complex movement, I’d still pick this up—because on set, not failing you matters most.
