The iPad Files app in iPadOS 26 finally feels like it’s grown up. Apple has overhauled how we manage and work with files: adding a smarter list view, custom folder colours with emoji, and even the option to set default apps for different file types. If you wrote off the Files app years ago, it’s time to take another look. About This Video

The Files app just got its biggest update in years with iPadOS 26, and honestly—it finally feels like something you can rely on. In this video I walk through what’s new, because while the flashy “liquid glass” look is what you’ll notice first, the day-to-day improvements are tucked inside Files. I remember when Files first landed: renaming was a pain, USB support was basically nonexistent, and cloud integration was patchy at best. Now it’s much closer to a proper, grown-up file manager. The big upgrade is the reworked list view. I can resize columns, collapse folders so I’m not overwhelmed, and sort by name, type, size, or date—so it’s instantly easier to spot huge files or recent work. Apple also finally lets me customise folders with colours and even emoji, which sounds small but makes scanning projects genuinely faster. Add to that the ability to drag a folder into the Dock (so I can drop files into a project from any app), set default apps per file type, and use the new Preview app for quick PDF markup and signatures, and Files suddenly becomes a tool I actually want to use. I also cover what hasn’t changed—and the gotchas: external drives can still need extra power, Files only shows one partition per device, formatting wipes everything, and there’s no universal version history. But overall, if you gave up on Files years ago, iPadOS 26 is the reason to take another look.
