In this video I put four colour E Ink tablets side by side and keep it dead simple: same colours, same setup, same lighting, and I’m just looking at what my eyes actually see. I’ve got the Penstar eNote Pro, BOOX Note Air 5C, reMarkable Paper Pro Move, and the newest one here, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. I test them with the front light off, then halfway, then full brightness (no warmth), because that’s where colour E Ink lives or dies in real use. A few things jump out. With no light, the Kaleido 3 devices are all pretty similar, and I’m being really picky if I try to split hairs—though the reMarkable stands out because it’s using Gallery 3/“Canvas Color”, so the colours look punchier and more saturated even without a front light. Once you crank brightness, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is the one that gets properly bright, and that helps lift the colours more than you’d expect. The reMarkable still wins on saturation (especially yellow), but it just can’t compete on brightness—and you’ve got that flashing that some people hate. My overall takeaway: if you want the most saturated colour and you can live with the flashing, reMarkable is the winner. If you want brightness, Kindle wins. BOOX gives you loads of settings to faff with, but in this simple test it lands last by a whisker, and Penstar sits somewhere in the middle.
