So, this stylus claims to have AI. But does it? In this video, I take a closer look at the Midas Pen, an Apple Pencil alternative that supposedly comes with built-in intelligence. Spoiler: the AI isn’t actually in the pen — it’s in a companion app called AIMall, developed by a Chinese company with some questionable translation and even more questionable privacy terms. About This Video

A while ago, the company behind the Midas Pen got in touch and asked if I wanted to review their “AI” stylus. I said sure… and then I had a little play. In this video I test the £60 Midas Pen as an Apple Pencil alternative on iPad, starting with the basics: what’s in the box (USB-A to USB-C cable, spare nibs, the pen), how it charges over USB‑C, and what the writing experience is like. Once you disconnect any existing stylus (yes, including your Apple Pencil), it pairs up and actually writes really nicely—tilt works, palm rejection works, and it’s noticeably more reliable than the previous Midas Pen I reviewed. Then we get to the “AI” bit, and this is the important takeaway: the AI isn’t in the pen, it’s in a companion app called AIMall/“AI Mole”. The app does the usual AI things—voice-to-text, summarising handwritten notes, translation, generic content generation, and meeting-style transcription—but none of it feels unique versus what you can already do with ChatGPT and other apps. I also flag the privacy concerns I found in the app’s terms (political/moral compliance language, unclear GDPR/UK protections), so my advice is simple: treat it as non-private and don’t upload anything sensitive.
