About This Video

In this video I’m sharing the #1 thing I recommend if you’re implementing anything at home with your preschooler: a morning basket. The idea comes from Charlotte Mason, and for me it’s the perfect way to “get around” the reality that a three-year-old (my son Luca is turning three this homeschool year) can’t be expected to do long, focused school time. A morning basket gives you a designated, intentional little pocket of educational time that still feels cozy and fun. I show you my actual basket (a heavy-duty $5 Goodwill find with a handle because I move it around the house) and how we’re using it right now—mostly at the kitchen table during/after breakfast. While he’s eating, I read a short scripture from a kids’ Bible that encourages questions and conversation. Then we do dinosaur flash cards plus a dinosaur book (because I’m always trying to make it fun for him), and he usually keeps flipping through it even after we’re done. I also preview what I’ll be adding once we officially start our Gentle + Classical Preschool curriculum in September—books like Peter and the Wolf and Camille and the Sunflowers (I pre-read everything so I can narrate it better). And I talk about Luca’s giant morning binder/busy book that he’s obsessed with, because hands-on activities are where he really thrives. My goal is a few minutes a day, no pressure, and lots of rich, enjoyable learning.
