About This Video

In this video I reviewed the Fosi Audio DS3, a portable “audiophile + gaming” USB-C dongle that sits around $99. I went through the unboxing (C2C cable, USB-C to USB-A adapter, manual, and the little card that teaches you game mode + filter switching), then talked build and I/O: small metal body, tempered glass back, side volume buttons, LED, USB-C input, plus both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced out. Spec-wise it’s running an ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M with an XMOS chipset, rated 120mW @32Ω SE and 220mW @32Ω balanced, and it supports up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD (native up to DSD512). Sound-wise, with the default minimum phase filter, the DS3 is neutral and a bit more “surgical” than “musical,” and the whole point is micro detail. Bass is normal (not thin, not thick) but it renders rumble better than a lot of sub-$100 dongles, and it has enough juice that my HD650 bass doesn’t turn “ew.” Mids are clean and uncolored with good clarity space, and treble is extended, airy, and packed with micro details. Technically, stage is bigger-than-medium and it even helps my HD650 feel wider than the usual “three blob” thing. Imaging, separation, and positioning are very good, and the FPS sound mode makes directional cues extra sharp. My main complaint is usability: no companion app, filter switching is not intuitive, and game mode activation is a bit of a ritual. Still, if you want crazy detail retrieval under $100, I can recommend the DS3 without hesitation.
