About This Video

In this video I reviewed a budget USB-C dongle from NiceHCK: the NK1 Max, and yes—this is basically my “Apple dongle alternative” take. NiceHCK sent it over, but as always this is 100% my honest opinion. I went through the unboxing, the included USB-C to USB adapter, and the build. For a ~20 USD dongle, it honestly feels really solid and it looks cool too since you can actually see the chip inside. Specs-wise it’s using the CX31993 paired with a MAX97220 op-amp chip, it supports mic + inline controls, and it goes up to 32-bit/384kHz. Power is rated at 63mW @ 32 ohms. For sound, my setup was the NK1 Max with the Audio-Technica R50X, Sennheiser HD650, and a bunch of budget IEMs, with music from Apple Music and YouTube Music across J-pop, rock, EDM, metal, jazz, and rap. My main impression: it sounds fun—slightly bouncy bass without getting bloated, slightly thick mids, and sparkly treble. Technicalities are the big win here: compared to the Apple dongle, it’s more defined, more detailed, airier, and better separated. If you want a compact, hassle-free dongle (or you lost your Apple dongle), I’d just grab this.
