In this video I review the brand new FiiO KA17 portable USB DAC/amp, and I go through everything that matters in real-world use: what’s in the box, how it’s built, how the menu works, and—most importantly—how much power and control it actually has with IEMs and full-size headphones. The KA17 is a compact aluminum dongle with a 0.91-inch display, tactile buttons, 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced outputs, plus a second USB-C power input for Desktop Mode. I also cover the internal engineering that makes it stand out: dual ESS ES9069Q DAC chips, THX AAA 78+ amplification, separate digital/analog boards, and a built-in 10-band parametric EQ. I tested it with Android, iPhone, a DAP, and PC, using FLAC/DSD plus Apple Music and Tidal. Sonically, I describe it as neutral, refined, very resolving and punchy, with a solid black background even with sensitive IEMs. It easily handled every IEM I threw at it (including very low impedance), and it drove many demanding full-size headphones with authority—HD6XX, SV023, Ananda Nano—without needing balanced cables. The only real limitation I ran into was iPhone power behavior: to enable Desktop Mode and unlock full volume, I needed a second power source, which is why a tiny power bank like FiiO’s E-Stick makes a lot of sense.
