About This Video

In this video I’m looking at the Apple USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Adapter—aka the Apple dongle—and the controversy around whether this $10 DAC/amp is “all you need” for wired audio on iPhone and Android. I break down two things you absolutely need to know before judging its performance: there are two hardware versions (US vs EU), and there’s also a software-level volume limitation on Android that can hold it back unless you use an app that can override the driver settings. I tested the US version (1 Vrms; the EU version is 0.5 Vrms) on my Samsung Galaxy S10 using USB Audio Player Pro to fully unlock output. For IEMs, it had no problem powering most of what I own. For full-size headphones, I pushed it with harder-to-drive pairs: the Sennheiser HD 6XX (300 ohm) was clearly struggling with no headroom and a presentation that felt too loose/relaxed, and the Beyerdynamic DT990 Edition needed max volume with zero headroom even though the synergy was surprisingly nice and the treble got tamed. With the Hifiman Ananda Nano, it still lacked power and needed max volume, but the synergy was interesting. My takeaway: it’s fantastic for the money, pairs very well with bright/neutral-bright IEMs and headphones, and it can handle many full-size models in the 16–120 ohm range—just don’t expect miracles with truly demanding headphones.
