About This Video

In this video I’m back in my basement studio with my friend Matt (we grew up skateboarding together, and now he’s out on commercial sets in lighting). He showed me a super simple rigging trick that honestly felt like rocket science the first time I saw it: putting small magnets on the ceiling so you can mount lights anywhere—without stands creeping into frame. In a tight space like my studio, that’s huge, because the second you try to add a rim light or edge light, the stand is just… there. With magnets, I can get separation, make the background pop, and light my posters properly without changing my framing. We break down two approaches: “source lights” that you don’t see in the shot (tape the magnets up with paper tape so you don’t destroy your paint), and “practical lights” that you do see (I screwed magnets into the drywall for a cleaner look, since the tape can be hard to hide). We also talk about how film sets use this to swap ugly flickery fluorescents for controllable tubes, plus why battery-powered, app-controlled lights make the whole thing even easier. Just do it at your own risk—don’t blame me if you drop a light.
