About This Video

Hey, me again. In this video I’m basically trying to answer a question I’ve been thinking about a lot lately: do I even need a “real” camera for certain kinds of content? I love my cameras and they’re amazing around the studio, but the reality is a big body with a heavy zoom isn’t exactly convenient when I want to shoot something spontaneous. I’m on a mission to make content creation as frictionless as possible—YouTube, reels, whatever—and that’s what kicked off the whole phone-vs-camera experiment. Before I committed to upgrading, I tested a full workflow on my iPhone 15 while Dennis came by the studio to help me figure out a fake frozen yogurt that won’t melt on camera (because frozen products are a nightmare unless you’re shooting in an actual freezer). We did a messy little experiment with frosting, powdered sugar, and strawberries, and I vlogged the whole thing on the phone—simple, fast, and honestly fun. Then I unboxed the iPhone 17 and shot a top-down setup while still caring about clean audio (FX3 + shotgun mic). I also did a goofy voiceover trend with Sarah to prove a point: if the quality is this good in something that lives in my pocket, it’s hard to ignore. I compare iPhone 17 Pro Max footage to my Sony A7S III, and the takeaway is pretty clear—smartphones can absolutely be “enough,” depending on what you’re making.
