About This Video

In this lesson I’m showing you how to play a simple, smooth 4-bar R&B loop, and I’m breaking it down step-by-step so you can get it under your fingers fast. The loop is in the key of B major, and you only need four chord shapes: Emaj9, D#m7, G#m7, and C#m7. I walk you through exactly where my fingers go for each voicing, and the big takeaway is that once you learn the shape for the minor 7, you can slide it to different frets and cover most of the progression. After the chords, I break down the picking pattern and the little details that make it sound R&B—especially the hammer-on, the quick mute, and the timing. On the Emaj9, I have you lift the pinky, bar the G string with the index, then hammer-on to the 8th fret of the G string and immediately mute by relaxing your fretting hand (or palm muting—either way works). The C#m7 section is the spiciest part: you go A-to-B, then do a hammer-on/pull-off on the B string and “walk back up.” I also show a quick slide up a whole step into D#m7, and if you’ve got a vibrato bar, a subtle wiggle adds that extra R&B flavor (no dive bombs).
