About This Video

Happy Friday—this Office Hours livestream (4/10/2026) is basically my weekly hang where I’m on for about an hour taking guitar questions, theory questions, gear questions… whatever helps you move forward. I kicked it off with Proverbs 15:22 (“without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed”) because I really believe in getting multiple perspectives. I watch other guitar teachers (including people who’ve been teaching 20–30 years) to steal what works, test it with my students, and keep improving what I’m teaching you. From there I got into some super practical stuff: the difference between major and minor chords (major = 1–3–5, minor = 1–b3–5, and that one note change makes a huge feel difference). I also talked about how to practice scales without getting bored—moving through keys (like around the circle of fourths), using patterns like “groups of four” (I picked that up from Corey Wong), and making it musical by improvising over a simple vamp. We also hit topics like when to get a pro setup, how I think about improvising (target notes from the chord tones, then connecting with lines/licks), and how to clean your guitar and reduce unwanted string noise with better muting and technique.
