About This Video

In this R&B guitar lesson, I’m showing you how to play “Southside” by Lloyd featuring Ashanti. The song isn’t too complicated, but it’s all bar chords—so if bar chords are a weak spot for you, this is a perfect chance to build hand strength and get your shapes sounding clean. I also explain why I’ve got a capo on fret 4 in the video: I’m not using it for the key, I’m just using it to lower the action on this guitar to make those bar chords easier to play. We’re in the key of C major, and you only need five chord shapes: Fmaj7 (8th fret), Em7 (7th fret), Dm7 (5th fret), G (7th fret), and Am (5th fret). I break down the full progression—Fmaj7 to Em7 to Dm7, then back to Fmaj7 to G to Am—and that loop carries the whole song. After that, I walk you through the picking pattern (A string, then D string, then G and B together) plus the little hammer-on/pull-off line on the B string between frets 5 and 6 while the Dm7 rings out. Once you’ve got those pieces, you can play the entire track smoothly.
